FAQ
Everything you need to know about racehorse ownership.
Getting Started
What is racehorse syndication?
Syndication lets a group of people share ownership of a racehorse. Each member buys a percentage, and in return they share in the experience — stable visits, race day access, regular updates, and any prizemoney the horse earns. It's a way to be part of elite racing without carrying the full cost on your own.
Why own with Ciaron Maher Racing Club?
CMRC gives you direct access to one of Australia's most successful training operations. Ciaron Maher Racing consistently performs at the highest level across the country, with runners competing in the biggest races on the calendar. As an owner, you benefit from world-class horsemanship, transparent communication, and a genuine community of like-minded racing enthusiasts.
How do I get started?
Browse our current offerings in the Marketplace, choose a horse that suits your budget and interests, and secure your share online. Once your identity is verified and payment is confirmed, you're officially part of the stable. From there you'll start receiving updates and invitations straight away.
Is racehorse ownership right for me?
If you enjoy racing, want a closer connection to the sport, and are comfortable with the fact that horses are athletes whose careers can be unpredictable, then ownership can be incredibly rewarding. There's nothing quite like watching a horse you're part of cross the line first. That said, it's important to understand that outcomes are never guaranteed — it's sport, not a savings plan.
Purchasing a Share
How much does a share cost?
Share prices vary from horse to horse depending on factors like bloodline, age, and the trainer's assessment of their potential. Every listing clearly displays the share price upfront so you know exactly what you're committing to before you purchase.
Are there ongoing fees after I purchase?
Your share price includes a contribution to the horse's operating reserve, which covers training, veterinary care, farrier, transport, and race entries. There are no surprise bills or monthly invoices — everything is managed through the reserve so you can enjoy the experience without worrying about ongoing costs.
How is the share price determined?
The share price reflects the horse's purchase cost, an operating reserve to cover day-to-day training and racing expenses, and a management fee. A full breakdown is provided for every offering so you can see exactly where your money goes. There are no hidden markups on the horse itself — you pay what we pay.
How many shares can I buy in a single horse?
Each offering has a maximum ownership cap per individual to make sure as many people as possible get a chance to be involved. The specific limit is shown on each horse's listing page. There's no minimum — you can start with a single share.
What payment methods do you accept?
We accept a range of payment methods to make purchasing as simple as possible. Full details are provided at checkout. If you have any questions about payment, the support team is happy to help.
The Ownership Experience
What updates will I receive about my horse?
Owners receive regular updates including training reports, race plans, veterinary summaries, and behind-the-scenes content from the stable. Updates are shared through the CMRC app and email so you're always in the loop on how your horse is progressing.
Do I get a say in how the horse is managed?
Training decisions, race selections, and day-to-day management are handled by Ciaron Maher Racing's expert team. This means your horse is always in the best possible hands. As an owner, you'll be kept informed about every decision — you just don't need to worry about making them.
Can I visit my horse at the stable?
Absolutely. CMRC organises stable visits and open mornings where owners can meet their horses, watch trackwork, and see the operation up close. Stable visits are coordinated to ensure the safety of both visitors and horses, so keep an eye on the app for upcoming dates.
Do owners get to help name horses?
When a new unraced horse joins the stable, we love getting owners involved in the naming process. Naming contests are run through the app, giving you the chance to submit and vote on names. It's one of the most popular parts of early ownership — there's something special about hearing a name you chose called by the race caller.
How are horses selected for the stable?
Every horse offered through CMRC goes through a rigorous selection process led by Ciaron Maher Racing's team. This includes physical inspections, pedigree analysis, veterinary assessments, and biomechanical evaluation. Only horses that meet the stable's standards make it to the Marketplace.
Where will my horse be trained?
Your horse will be trained at one of Ciaron Maher Racing's state-of-the-art facilities. The training location is chosen based on what best suits the horse's development and racing goals. Each listing specifies where the horse is currently based, and the team will keep you informed if that changes as the horse's career progresses.
How does the team use sports science and data?
Ciaron Maher Racing employs a dedicated sports science and data team that works alongside trainers to optimise every horse's preparation. This includes GPS tracking during training, biomechanical analysis, and a proprietary database that informs race planning and scheduling. It's one of the ways the stable stays at the forefront of modern racing.
Can I sell or transfer my share?
If your circumstances change, the team can help facilitate the sale or transfer of your share. Reach out through the app or contact support to discuss your options. The process is straightforward, and the team will guide you through each step.
What happens when my horse retires?
Horse welfare is a priority at Ciaron Maher Racing. When a horse's racing career ends, the team works to find an appropriate pathway — whether that's rehoming to an owner, transitioning to a second career in equestrian sport, or placement through a reputable rehoming program. Owners are kept informed throughout the process.
Race Day
Can I attend race days as an owner?
Yes — one of the best parts of ownership is being there on race day. CMRC owners receive invitations when their horse is running, along with details on how to access owner areas at the track. The experience of cheering your horse home from the mounting yard or members' area is what ownership is all about.
Do owners get access to the mounting yard or winner's circle?
In most cases, yes. Tracks across Australia have been very supportive of syndicate owners, and we work to arrange mounting yard and winner's circle access wherever possible. For bigger race days or restricted events, we coordinate passes through a ballot to make sure it's fair.
How do I find out when my horse is racing?
You'll receive a notification through the CMRC app whenever your horse is entered or accepted to race. Notifications include the race meeting, time, distance, and any relevant details so you can plan your day — whether you're heading to the track or watching from home.
How are prizemoney earnings distributed?
When your horse earns prizemoney, the funds first go towards replenishing the operating reserve to cover ongoing expenses. Once the reserve is healthy, surplus earnings are distributed to owners in proportion to their share. Payouts and balances are all visible through your account.
Your Account
How do I update my contact details?
You can update your name, email, phone number, and mailing address through your account settings in the CMRC app or website. If you run into any issues, our support team is happy to help — just reach out via the Contact page.
What identity verification is required?
All owners must complete identity verification as required by Australian racing regulations. This is a straightforward process completed online during your first purchase. You'll need to provide photo ID and a few personal details — most verifications are confirmed within minutes.
How do I access my ownership certificates?
Digital certificates of ownership are available through your account in the CMRC app. Simply navigate to your horse's page and you'll find the option to view or download your certificate. It's a great keepsake, especially if your horse goes on to win.
How is my ownership formally registered?
When your horse is ready to race, CMRC handles the formal ownership registration with Racing Australia on your behalf. You'll be asked to complete the necessary paperwork, and the team manages the rest. This ensures your ownership is officially recorded with the relevant racing authority.
